GALLERY MoMo is pleased to represent a solo exhibition by Dawoon JUNG entitled “Raise high the sails!” from Saturday, December 7th through Saturday, January 18th.
Jung has developed his “delusion” as the motifs and employed the technique of the monochrome etching to connect the “delusion” and “reality.” As Jung himself says that the models in the works are between everyday and extraordinary, at the same time, they are dreams. Expressing the world of modern anxiety, loneliness, and hope, the world of his works is more like a scene from a movie or story than a real scene. Not like the paintings that directly put the paints to the canvas, the process of printmaking takes more steps such as drawing, engraving, and printing. Sometimes, this inconvenience process makes the artist have distance from the works. This distance from the works by doing the same process repeatedly is an important element in his works to visualize his own complex inner world. Jung continues to explore his art while clearing the purpose of his creativity.
Dawoon Jung was born in 1989 in Korea and received an M.A. from Musashino Art University in 2015. Currently, he is in the doctoral program at the university. In 2016, Jung award a grand prize of Masuo Ikeda at the 10th Madokapia Print Biennial, and was selected for the Shell Art Award 2016 and Face 2017 Sompo Japan Nipponkoa Art Award. He studied at Universität der Künste Berlin, Germany for a year from 2017 and deepened his view of the world.
Raise high the sail!
My life wonders a series of accidental events unnecessarily.
The terrible suspicion that the accidental event may not be just coincidence.
Open the way to the essence!
Raise high the sail as if it exists!
By raising high the sail, drifting becomes a voyage.
I’m not a slave of wind. I’m not a slave of the wave.
Raise high the sail, and play with the winds and waves.
The winds and the waves are everyone’s and it is only myself to raise the sails.
The bird flying over there is the life of the bird.
It’s not winds, waves, or birds to guide me in the journey of my life.
The only way to go to me is to raise high sails.
It is very difficult to be honest.
First of all, I have to start to be honest with my boring taste.
Open the way to lead the essence.
The way I head is only one side of the world.
The place where connects my way and everyone’s way.
The place where crosses the roots of constant joy and tremendous suffering.
Raise high the sails!
